ARCH 121 Assignment 05

This text i write about my comments is “Three Reminders To Architects”  the  mass and surface part by Le Corbusier.

The concept of construction is usually based on calculation of geometric forms. Todays world architects should use simple forms of geometry for creating good art and at the same time useful buildings.

According to text the aim of real construction is not about style. It is about the value its function. By applying basic principles of construction which are abstraction and brutal facilities, we can achieve pure and modern structure. For making a functioning constitution of course there a  few thing that we have to obey its rule like gravity in contrary, there are lots of thing that we can avoid which are ornamental addings.

There are tree major things, in these days it has lost their value little bit, which are mass, surface and plan. Basicly plan is the generator. Mass and surface are the things determined by the plan.

As an architects we can achieve magnificent by playing masses brought together in light. We can open in a new world for our eyes in this way. It is like a theater ,but this time stage changes with the movement of sun light.

Using cones, cylinder, spheres etc. helps us to express what we want to emphasise very easily. Of course there are lots of different subjective perspectives about art. The writer claims it is no longer maintain, valid and useful. The architects should be focused on today’s world and its need , not history or primary times’ need.

The writer suggests  that we should not forget the things we thought at school, we should obey the basic rules which are based on calculation and plan.

In this text we can clearly understand mass and surface has directly connection. According to Le Corbusier opinion all buildings based on same things which are based of course if we think basicly. These lines are shaping according to need and it become a structure. In deed, they are just combination of lines, surface and mass. With different surfaces we can dived things in this way we can have different composition within all.

To deal with the today architectural problem first, we should focus on efficiency problem. after we understand the need we can process of our work, because in modern architecture according to Le Corbusier most efficient thing is making buildings useful to fit in our life and its need.

Finally, we should first understand everything does not have to be aesthetic. We should be aware of necessity. And we should have tendency to engineering world as well.

To sum up, while we are producing we should be aware of what we need, then we should consider what we are going to leave for our future  after that we should build.

ARCH 121 Assignment 04

This article is that i share about  my opinion  “Regulating Lines”, by Le Corbusier.

This article explains how measured units is important for getting advantage in terms of well construction. Also using linear and planer elements like lines, square, hexagon, octagon let us to utilise while making an order in construction and helps to enclosure in a strict form.

Although regulating lines meant to be show end and start,it creates a base of our design and our choices. We can have advantage by using liner elements to mathematical calculation and measurement. The most essential thing for our work is that should be based on adopt a unit of measurement to obtain solidity and utility. Also these elements are already proportioned and scaled therefore it is more easy to work with them while we try to create a new things.

The important specialities of geometrical form is that can easily recognize and measured by the eyes. The reason of their forms it is not necessary to try enclosure the elements that we compose.

Using variation of geometric elements also let us to create a regularity in chance and order. By obtaining our chance between the our geometrical  elements, we can easily creates rhythms, rhyme , sequences and harmony.

However in these days people think architect leave the basic orders of construction which is obtaining regulating line in their design,of course it is not true. no matter how the constructions are changed from past to now. Their bases are still same. All great construct born from regulated lines then their architects develop them into something more by adding more. From first man to now, all creations of structure bases on the same thing no matter how technology is improved.technologic change only the time and the effort we spent than the old times.

The choice of our regulating lines gives us to chance of getting inspiration for our creation. And actually this choice is the vital operation of architecture.Additionaly, another important thing of construction is compose thing in a manner which let the things unit and stable. In this way by using a geometric elements harmoniously we  can achieve a beautiful creation with good quality in a simple manner.

This article is that i share about  my thoughts  “Pure Creation Of Mind”, by Le Corbusier , Towards a New Architecture, Dover Publication,1986 (originally 1927), pp. 199-224.

This article appears me by giving some information about old greek temples. However he use lots of implicit expressions that makes harder to understand the writer aims, he also managed to giving information which creates an examples for his aim at the same time.

He shapes his thought around the examples that are taking by different area of life. In this way he wants to make us  understand the basic idea behind the all this words.

The basic idea that LE Corbusier tries to tell no matter what we think about structure specialities or aim , it is built to be just being. Of course architect could be influenced something or someone while making a structure but it doesn’t mean they are same or they have similarity. All structure has their own specialities they are unique in its creators mind. The basic structural elements can be limited but it doesn’t mean, we couldn’t have a variety between limited elements , we do. We could have freedom between the edges only if we use creation of our mind and challenges ourselves for composing and creating new things.

The video that we watched ” What Does Music Mean?”, Young People Concerts, by Bernstein, 1958.

In this video he tries to explain his ideas by talking , exemplifying, playing etc. ,The basic idea that he wants to teach is music is not about story or it doesn’t have to be connected with something. It can influenced by something but it  also doesn’t mean it has to be related with it. Music is born just to be. It is  the composition of elements which are notes. They have a connection, harmony, sequences  between all the notes; with all this components in the composer’s mind it become a unity then music is happened.

If we consider this text and video together we can clearly understand that no matter what the topic is, the elements we have can be limited ,but it can also possible to make a variation between the limitation by making  harmony ,  creating sequences, compositing, pushing our creativity , making connection , applying hierarchy etc. In this way we can make things just to be by making composition between the edges  by using our freedom of creation.

ARCH 121 Assignment 02

In this post i write my opinion about “The Design Studio” written by J ANDERSON, Architectural Design, AVA Publishing, 2011, pp 8-31.

This is very objective text. In the text you can easily find lots of description of architectural terms. In terms of that, the text does not contain any arguable part as well.

The first part of the text writer explains what studio is and how things work there. Actually, while i was reading the text , i clearly saw that every studio has some similar points in some way.

Also, writer shows the similarities and differences between real life and studio life. In this way, he also emphasis how studio practice is important and how real life practice and studio life practice have a connection.

In the text, i clearly understand that, in due course, approaching the education of architecture has changed, but the basic ideas of architecture has not changed.

In additionally, i relief after i wrote the text. Because the text shows me how architectural education is not only difficult for me or my friend but also difficult for everyone who has just started.. I think it is difficult and challenging process. On the other hand, i think this is only little prices that we have to pay while we compare to what might we would do and have.

In last few pages, the writer saves us from being pessimistic and gives us some clues for having progress in our educational life. The clues about which things can improve us, what might help us.

This important points that he emphasis shows me twice how sketching, group working, tutoring, workshops and communication is important for an architect life.

Also, at the end he gives some useful hints for our future. The hints are about projects, professional life process and etc.

While he is ending his article he again and again tries to prepare us against the things that we are going to face in our education and future daily life which are criticism, challenging and etc. To deal with these things also he gives his last suggestion and he says we should get feedback, work with our colleague and friend, share our work in public for improve our work by getting some critic and being in dialog

After i wrote the text i learn some useful things, because of that i suggest to read this text to everyone who wants getting some useful hints and ideas about architectural education and architectural professional life.

ARCH 121 Assigment 01

This comments that i write about  belongs to BRAWNE, M. (“Architecture & Language”, Architectural Thought: The Design Process and the Expectant Eye”, Architectural Press, 2003, pp. 151-153). In this assignment, which given us in our arch 121 class, we are expected to share our thoughts about the article which called architectural and language.

In this text, the writer explains some word both daily and architectural usage by showing connection between them in terms of similarity. I like the similarity he showed  because i have never recognized these simple connection between life and basic architectural word before. Actually i most like the second paragraph  because the second paragraph he explains some situations by using architectural words with different meaning  in phrases, also the phrases he chose make me smile due to the connection of being a newly architecture student. The reason of we are in the begging of our education  we often  make mistakes and while we are thinking we are going well, mostly we are falling through the floor like he says.

Also i have never thought the language of architecture as wide as that. This text shows me while some words borne from old words by gaining new meanings on the other hand, some words born by getting affect the different areas of life for example; human nature, art etc.

The only thing that does not make me satisfied  is last paragraph. Because it is not explained very clearly. The writer says some architectural words can based on early man age, but also after that he says  it might not certain as well. So i think this is  the part  which has contains lots of unknown inside it .

This text that i write my opinions about called introduction written by FORTY, A.( “Introduction”, Words and Buildings, Thames & Hudson, 2000, pp. 10-17).

Although i agree the basic idea of Evelyn wants to give in the first paragraph, I think it is not possible to describe all architect and their specialties by dividing four part. Because i think every person has their own specialties, interest and creativity differ from the other. That makes us who we are  and makes us unique.

Indeed most architect have great power to use language, the real interesting part of being an architect is having  a new language to explain yourself and also this language only getting by someone who really tries to understand you and use their brain for it.

I like while the writer mention similarity between fashion and architecture, he  is also not passing through without saying differences in terms of what their word based on.

I think it is true that no matter how we use language efficiently, sometimes the word especially translated word or even our own language is not cover enough to explain what we try to explain. The reason of that sometimes we find our own solution like the way  we used to it; by creating new things in this situation; new words. Like he mentions there is a similarity between an architect and stylist we both like creating new things, so that to explain ourselves we create new words or try to reborn  the words or getting words from the other language.

The writer take very widely of topic language and even he is not forget to say no matter the some word of architecture is  based on very old-time some of them have gained new meaning with daily life. Also he says architectural word choosing is not easy while you are trying to explain something, it can be more subjective than being objective and we have to careful about that.

At the end, he says we should mostly choose wider and spread language to more clear understanding level while we explain ourselves, but i don’t agree with some part of this idea. Because sometimes while we translate the words loses their values on the other hand, sometimes the words are getting better and gained more value. The reason of that we should find the best word to cover what we want to say no matter which language it comes.
