Guest: Structural Engineer in Practice
This week our guest gave a speech about role of structural engineering in design practice. He emphasised the duty of engineers, their practice process related to collaboration with architects. He tried to explain us how we should make a collaboration with engineers what kind of things we should be aware of and etc.
Firstly he mentioned his opinions about daily engineering practice applications, some tools and systems for pointing out it’s adventages and disadvantages. Then he took the attention to common failures so that we can be more careful in our practice life. While he share his experiences he showed some real-life case examples.
As an architect we should make a good collaboration with engineers to make sure our design and our structural applications are enough and useful for making safe structure to use.
While we are working on the safety conditions of our building, loads and earthquakes are most common concern of ours. For preventing the possible failures commonly occur in structure, we mentioned about the most typical design failures.
We can categorized some of common failure of design as;
- Soft stories
- Weak stories
- Torsional irregularities
- Vertical irregularities
- Non_ parallel irregularities
- Re_entrant corners
- Plan irregularities
In addition to all these, we also talked about free and restricted movement of columns for preventing possible failures as well. The he lastly mentioned how healthy load distributions should be.
To sum up, in most of the cases we studies, we can say that common mistake occurs related to the miscommunication between engineers and architects or primarily design mistakes or engineers /architects or both recklessness.
